GravitHy has selected Energiron Zero Reformer (ZR) technology for a new direct reduction plant to be developed in Fos-sur-Mer, France.
The facility will produce 2 million tonnes per year of Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) and will support Europe's transition toward low-carbon steelmaking through the use of hydrogen-based iron production.
The plant is designed to operate with Green hydrogen produced on-site, combined with an advanced electric process gas heater, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions associated with ironmaking.
Leveraging Energiron Zero Reformer technology, the facility will deliver premium-quality metallics with a metallization degree of up to 96% and a carbon content of approximately 1%, providing an optimized HBI product for high-efficiency electric arc furnace steel production.
The project encompasses the complete direct-reduction installation, including hydrogen-ready process equipment, gas-heating systems, water treatment facilities, and material handling infrastructure. The produced HBI will serve as a high-quality, low-carbon iron feedstock for steelmakers seeking to accelerate their decarbonization strategies.
With a total investment exceeding €3 billion, the GravitHy project ranks among the most significant green iron initiatives currently under development in Europe. The facility is expected to play a key role in building a sustainable iron and steel value chain, further demonstrating the potential of hydrogen-based direct reduction as a cornerstone technology for future steel production.
Energiron is the DRI technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli.
